United Methodist Church of Wilmington
November 24, 2002 Thanksgiving Sunday 10:15 a.m.
ORDER
OF WORSHIP
As you prepare your hearts and your minds for
worship, reflect on these words:
“The earth has
yielded its produce. God, our God, has
blessed us. God provides food for all
living creatures, for God’s faithful love endures forever. Give thanks to the God of heaven, for God’s
faithful love endures forever.”

Call
to Worship:
Leader: Good morning!
People: Good morning!
Leader: Let us gather together in
thanksgiving to God.
People: For God has made us and this earth which gives us nurture.
Leader: Let us gather in gratitude to one another.
People: For we are the bearers of God’s blessing and love for the earth
and to all people.
Leader: Let
us praise God; let us join hands; let us reach out in care and courage.
People: so that the goodness of life may be for all God’s
children. Amen.
Invocation (Unison)
O
Lord our God, you are always more ready to bestow your good gifts on us than we
are to seek them, and are willing to give more than we desire or deserve. Help us so to seek that we may truly find,
so to ask that we may joyfully receive, so to knock that the door of mercy may
be opened to us, through Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen.
CONFESSION AND AFFIRMATION
Silent
Meditation
Call
to Confession (Pastor)
The
proof of God’s amazing love is this:
While
we were yet sinners Christ died for us.
In humility and faith, let us confess our sin to God.
Prayer
of Confession (Unison)
O
God our Father you have lavished on us gifts of life abundant. But we confess that we have often used your
gifts carelessly, and acted as though we were not grateful. When we enjoy the fruits of the harvest but
forget they come from you, then in your fatherly mercy forgive us and help us. When we store up goods for ourselves alone,
as if there were no God and no heaven, God in your mercy, forgive us and help
us. Grant us thankful hearts and a
loving concern for all people, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Assurance
of Forgiveness (Pastor)
Hear
these comforting words:
If
you repent and believe in God’s redeeming mercy, your sins are forgiven. Trust in God’s promises and begin anew your
life with God and all people. In the
name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
